David Bowie inspires new Hotel Café Royal bar

The life and work of David Bowie have inspired a new cocktail bar based inside London’s Hotel Café Royal, called Ziggy’s.

The bar pays homage to the late music icon, who was a famous patron of Hotel Café Royal and even hosted a retirement party for his Ziggy Stardust alter ego at the venue in the 1970s.

Ziggy’s will serve “modern twists” on some of Bowie’s favourite drinks and also offer a range of cocktails inspired by his life and acclaimed album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, with each drink named after a lyric from the record.

Hotel Café Royal’s bars and beverages manager, Fabio Spinetti, formerly of The Connaught, worked with the Ziggy’s bar team to create the menu.

Serves include: Darkness and Disgrace, which is inspired by the Rum Flip and Espresso Martini and contains dark rum, tawny Port, coffee liqueur, sugar syrup and egg yolk; and Tiger on Vaseline, which is inspired by the classic Piña Colada and contains cachaça, Tanaka spiced rum, roasted pineapple juice and lime juice.

Ziggy’s is situated next to newly opened restaurant Laurent. The bar features a selection of photography of Bowie by Mick Rock, who was the musician’s official photographer during the last years of Ziggy Stardust.

The bar will launch on 20 September, and will be open Monday-Saturday from 5pm-1am.

Ziggy’s is not the first bar to be inspired by Bowie – earlier this year, New York’s BKW by Brooklyn Winery launched a cocktail menu inspired by the many personas of the musician.
