Nant Distillery expansion to double production

Australian Whisky Holdings (AWY) is planning to expand production at Tasmanian whisky distillery Nant, which will double its current distillation capacity.

Single malt producer Nant Distillery is preparing to double its current distillation capacity

Private equity group AWY completed its AU$3m acquisition of The Nant Group in August last year, taking ownership of all whisky production assets on the Nant Estate.

Currently, the 300-acre Nant Estate produces eight,100-litre barrels of single malt per week, approximately 400 barrels per year.

The first stage of expansion will see AWY increase production to 14,100-litre barrels per week, the equivalent of 700 barrels per year – an increase of 75%.

The estimated capital expenditure required to complete the production expansion is approximately AU$450,000 to AU$500,000 (US$354,000 to US$393,000).

The second stage of the expansion will involve the construction of an additional distillery on the Nant Estate. AWY has already acquired two additional stills from Scotland, which were built as a replica of the existing still on-site, and housed in 40-foot containers.

Once commissioned, this will enable AWY to operate distilling 24 hours a day, with production increasing to 30×100-litre barrels per week – more than double the production reached in the first stage of expansion

Subject to future sales, AWY said that it would have the potential to operate over a seven-day week, with production increasing to 42×100-litre barrels per week.

According to AWY, final costing and timing for the second stage expansion plans are still being assessed, but it is estimated to be completed for approximately AU$2.5m (US$1.97m).

The news follows AWY’s plans to purchase the remaining shares in Tasmanian spirits producer Lark Distillery for AU$10.7m (US$8.3m).
