Jameson launches Wild Seaweed Bitters

Irish whiskey brand Jameson has unveiled its second bitters expression – Jameson Wild Seaweed, made with a variety of herbs and wild dillisk seaweed.

The new offering has been created at the Middleton Distillery in County Cork, Ireland, and developed by Dave Quinn, master of whiskey science.

Jameson Wild Seaweed Bitters is the second release in the Jameson Bitters range, following the launch of Jameson Wild Sloe Berry Bitters in 2015, which was created to inspire bartenders to experiment with Jameson.

The expression is made with wild dillisk seaweed that has been hand-harvested from Long Rock, County Sligo, and dried naturally on the shores of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way by Damian Melvin, a second-generation seaweed harvester.

The bitters combines the seaweed with Jameson Irish whiskey and a variety of herbs – including cinchona, wormwood, ginseng and gentian.

Bottled at 46% abv, the expression is described as “rich, intense and well-balanced” with aromas and flavours of the Irish seashore.

Two to three dashes of Jameson Wild Seaweed Bitters are recommended served in a Manhattan, Old Fashioned or an Irish Red Ale.

“It’s no secret that part of Jameson’s success in the UK and around the world has been down to strong brand advocacy among the world’s best bartenders, and we are committed to developing exciting new concepts that ignite the creativity of these industry leaders,” said Brendan Buckley, strategy, insights, innovation and prestige whiskeys director for Irish Distillers.

“Since launching our Jameson Bitters project back in 2015, the feedback from the global on-trade has been fantastic so we cannot wait to see how bartenders around the world interpret the flavour of the Irish coastline in their creations using Jameson Wild Seaweed Bitters, the first seaweed bitters in the market.”

Jameson Wild Seaweed Bitters is available to buy for an RRP of €20 (US$24.80) per 100ml bottle from Jameson Distillery Bow Street in Dublin, the Jameson Distillery in Middleton, and online.
