This London club is so secretive they wouldn’t even provide a rough cost of joining.

5 Hertford Street, in Mayfair, has played host to George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio over the years and prospective members must personally apply if they hope to step through the exclusive doors.

The club has a strict dress code, with no t-shirts or sportswear permitted and “gentlemen must wear jackets at all times”.

If you manage to earn a spot at the bar, you’ll also find an exclusive cigar shop and Loulou’s nightclub inside the secretive London club.

The Metropolitan Club, New York

Founded by American banker JP Morgan in 1891, the club was established in protest after Morgan’s friend was not accepted into a rival venue.

With an annual membership fee of US$5000, this club plays host to the elite of New York and famous faces such as John Goodman and Sofia Coppola are known to frequent the club, located just off Central Park.

The club insists that members must wear formal clothing at all times and the use of mobile phones and laptops is strictly prohibited inside the venue.

The Vaults, Edinburgh/19 Greville Street, London

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s exclusive clubs in Edinburgh and London offer whisky fans an incredible experience.

The historic venues lie at the heart of the whisky society and members can sample their impressive collection of whiskies while relaxing in the Cask Room.

A basic membership costs £61.50 and allows entry to both venues as well as a subscription to the society’s magazine but for £122, members can sign up for a pioneer membership which adds several free bottles of Scotch whisky and a significant discount in bars across the country.

In the past, the secretive bars have played host to famous faces such as British chef Jamie Oliver.

Silencio, Paris

Silencio opened in 2011 and was inspired by a bar of the same name in director David Lynch’s 2001 film Mulholland Drive.

Once you’ve paid the clubs €15 entry fee, you can enjoy the 24-seat cinema, library and smoking room as well as two bars and a stage.

Since opening, Silencio has been booked for a number of parties and events hosted by major celebrities and fashion brands.

Even when the club is not reserved, the member events are considered the height of Paris nightlife, with the clubs founder David Lynch and Kanye West known to drop by from time to time.

The Toronto Temperance Society, Toronto

Despite the name, this 48-capacity bar is known for producing some of the best cocktails in Toronto.

Once you’ve paid the monthly membership fee of US$25, members can enjoy access to one of Canada’s finest selection of spirits while “practicing the art of drinking well”.

The Society has certain rules for guests to follow, including: “No phones at the bar” and “Men are not to speak to women unless they are spoken to first”.

The California Club, Los Angeles

There’s a saying in Los Angeles which goes: “The people who run Los Angeles belong to the Jonathan Club. The people who own Los Angeles belong to the California Club.”

The secretive club was founded in 1887 and has a reputation as one of the finest members clubs in the world.

If you hope of becoming a member, you must first be invited to interview by six current members and, if you pass the interview, then there’s just the small matter of the “undisclosed” admission fee.

The club has a strict dress code for all members which states no denim or athletics shoes and “collared shirts must be worn by gentlemen”.

This speakeasy is hidden in the heart of Rome and has a regularly changing password, which is uncovered by answering a question hidden on the bars website.

The tiny bar seats 40 people and has a strict set of rules, such as no flash photography, no vodka and the bartender is always right.

Membership to the bar costs US$7 annually and you must be a member to visit, no guests are allowed.

Mutis, Barcelona

If you want to gain entry to this exclusive speakeasy you need to know people on the inside, the only way to book a table at the bar is by invitation from a member.

Once inside, you’ll find yourself mesmerised by the 1920s décor and will be able to sample cocktails at what is though to be one of the best bars in Europe.

The drinks menu boasts some of the world’s best and rarest spirits and has a cocktail list full of modern twists on classic drinks.

Located above the popular and similarly named Bar Mut, Mutis has seen Woody Allen and Robert De Niro pass through its secret door.

Milk and Honey, London

The £500 annual membership fee will allow you to pass through the unassuming door in London’s bustling Soho.

This bar is one of the city’s best kept secrets and provides members with a calming environment filled with some of the best cocktails and a smooth jazz soundtrack to whisk you away from the chaos outside.

The bar opens to non-members early in the week until 11pm, after this time it’s reserved for members only.

Since opening in 2003, the bar has played host to faces such as Zooey Deschanel and Selena Gomez.

KEE Club, Hong Kong

When it opened, Hong Kong’s KEE Club set out to build a traditional drinking salon with private dining, an exclusive bar and entertainment.

Founded in 2001, the club’s membership fee is HK$20,000 (US$2560) annually and prospective members must fill out an application form to be considered.

In the past, KEE has hosted ex-president Bill Clinton and basketball superstar Michael Jordan.

The exclusive venue was forced to close its doors earlier this year, however it is currently searching for a new, secret location to restart the party once more.
