Whiskey-based deodorant seeks Kickstarter funding

A US-based husband and wife team have launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring its whiskey-based organic deodorant to wider audiences.

The whiskey deodorant was inspired by the bacteria-killing properties of hand sanitiser

The spray, called Pit Liquor, comes from Jason and Erica Feucht, Colorado-based owners of Distilled Bath & Body. When Erica was pregnant, Jason asked that she stop using chemical deodorants. She challenged him to come up with a suitable alternative, in the mean time settling for a hand sanitiser, which gave Jason the idea to experiment with alcohol.

Because of the quick dissipation of the scent, the wearer does not smell of whiskey, which was a key concern with customers.

The couple say that they have tested it on people in all sorts of roles from teachers and policemen to yoga teachers and parents, and no one commented on the smell. They are now also making a line of vodka deodorant which smells even less.

According to the pair’s Kickstarter page, only organic alcohol will be used from producers such as JB Thome & Co. The money raised from the crowdfunding page will go toward the purchase of 50-gallon drums of vodka, whiskey, and rum, as well as marketing materials.

The final product is bottled at 136 proof and works on the same principle as a hand sanitiser by killing bacteria. Arrowroot is added to the deodorant, which “helps with dryness”.

The range comes in three flavours – vanilla, black pepper and lavender. The bottles will contain sprigs of lavender, slices from vanilla beans, whole cloves, and whole peppercorns.

A one-ounce container is US$8 and a 3.4 ounce bottle is US$12.

The pair are hoping to raise US$12,000 over the next month.
