Auchentoshan reveals UK New Malt Order winners

Single malt Scotch whisky brand Auchentoshan has named Lachlan Rooney of Edinburgh-based The Voodoo Rooms and Charles Roche of London’s Scout as the newest members of its bartender collective, The New Malt Order.

The duo triumphed over eight other competitors across two gruelling rounds in the UK final of the competition, which took place in London on 5 September.

The contest, now in its second year, was judged by Gary Sharpen, co-founder of The Cocktail Lovers magazine; Thomas Aske, founding member of Fluid Movement; and 2016 UK winner, Jack Wareing of Dandelyan.

Rooney and Roche will go on to join 10 other winners from across the globe at the home of Auchentoshan in Glasgow later this month to create Edition 2 of The Bartender’s Malt for release in 2018.

The collective will undertake sensory and immersive workshops, and will be granted access to the warehouses at Auchentoshan.

At the end of the week, they will hand-select barrels for the second expression of The Bartender’s Malt – “designed by bartenders, for bartenders” to complement cocktails.

Marco Di Ciacca, senior brand manager for Auchentoshan, said: “Auchentoshan is not your traditional single malt whisky. We have done things differently for almost two centuries and The New Malt Order is no exception.

“As the original city malt, Auchentoshan is dedicated to recruiting and nurturing fresh, creative talent from behind the bar who can demonstrate they challenge the norms to become part of this global Collective.

“We definitely have that in Lachlan and Charles. We really felt they exemplified the spirit of Auchentoshan by using their creativity and passion to challenge the normal conventions of malt whisky.”
