Luxco to start Bourbon distilling this year

US spirits producer Luxco has revealed further details about its new US$35 million Bourbon distillery in Kentucky, which is expected to start production at the end of this year.

Lux Row Distillers is set to start production before the end of this year

Speaking to The Spirits Business yesterday, John Rempe, who is director of research and development at Luxco, but also acts as its master blender, said Bardstown-based Lux Row Distillers will have a capacity of one million proof gallons a year, however, “the whole distillery has been designed to expand”.

“Our stillhouse has been designed to drop in another column,” he told SB. “Right now we are planning for a lot more volume down the road.”

Luxco, which produces the Rebel Yell, Ezra Brooks and Blood Oath Bourbon brands, will have a greater opportunity to pursue innovation with the build of Lux Row Distillers, Rempe added.

“Initially, we will be focusing on our two main mash bills, but I am always looking out for new things,” he said.

Once Lux Row Distillers’ own whiskey is old enough to be bottled, the company will completely cease its contracts with third party Bourbon distillers.

Lux Row Distillers, plans for which were confirmed last year, will span 18,000 square feet and include six barrel warehouses, a tasting room and an event space. It will join the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Earlier this year, Luxco finalised construction plans for a new Tequila distillery in Jalisco in partnership with Destiladora González González. It will produce Luxco’s 100% Exotico and El Mayor Tequila brands.

According to Greg Mefford, Luxco’s international sales director, Luxco will start distilling agave before it starts distilling Bourbon. While the Jalisco distillery, named DGL Destiladores, will make Luxco premium and super-premium products, the group will continue to use third party suppliers for its mixtos.
