‘World’s first’ sunflower spirit launches
US-based Dalton Distillery has launched what is claimed to be the “world’s first” sunflower spirit, called TazaRay.
TazaRay comes in two varieties and are made using malted sunflower seeds and malted corn
TazaRay comes in two varieties: Red, which is aged in a used red wine barrel; and White, which is aged in a charred Bourbon barrel. Both are 90 proof (45% abv).
Using malted sunflower seeds as the primary grain and malted corn as the accompanying grain, the spirit is described as having a “unique clean flavour profile and a hint of nuttiness” on the finish.
Created by master distiller Raymond Butler, both offerings are gluten-free and non-GMO.
According to the distillery, TazaRay cannot be labelled as a whiskey, as sunflower seeds are not considered to be a grain by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau regulations.
The name is a nod to both the Butler family’s Native American roots and to the spirit of the sun.
Based in Dalton, Georgia, the Dalton Distillery launched Raymond Reserve Straight Corn Whiskey and Raymond Reserve Cinnamon Whiskey in 2015.
Dalton Distillery is currently working with distributors nationwide to launch TazaRay in stores.
