Virginia Distillery Co launches cask purchase programme

Lovingston-based whisky maker the Virginia Distillery Company has introduced The Cask Society, an initiative which enables individuals or groups to buy a barrel of maturing liquid.

The scheme, which offers personalised membership from US$9,900, allows participants to choose their own version of Virginia single malt whisky by selecting casks based on barrel type, ageing length and bottling strength.

Cask types on offer include ex-Bourbon barrels, treated wine casks, and ex-Sherry butts.

Ageing options range from four to 10-plus years, and bottling strengths vary from 46% abv up to natural cask strength.

One a member joins the society, they are invited to either fill their own barrel or opt for the distilling team to do so based on their barrel profile.

The cask is then personalised with the members name and laid down to mature in the distillery’s Cask House No. 1

Once the liquid has come of age, the barrel owner can participate in its bottling.

In addition, Cask Society membership includes early access to limited edition whisky releases, tour and tasting credits, invites to tastings and gifts, including a custom copper barrel thief (vallinch).

Participants also receive an engraved plaque matched to the one displayed in Cask House No. 1, and at the end of the programme they can keep their barrel head.

“The Cask Society program is an exclusive, one-of-a-kind offering,” said Virginia Distillery Company’s CEO Gareth H. Moore.

“We’re thrilled to be offering whisky lovers the opportunity to customise a cask of our Virginia Single Malt and also be a part of the ageing experience for the product they will eventually call their own.”

Last year Virginia Distillery Company opened The Virginia Whisky Experience, an educational guided tour which includes an interactive museum space.
