William Grant buys Tuthilltown Spirits
Following the acquisition of Hudson Whiskey in 2010, William Grant & Sons has bought the brand’s New York-based producer Tuthilltown Spirits for an undisclosed sum.
William Grant has acquired the 36-acre facility based in Hudson Valley, marking the firm’s first foray into American whiskey distilling.
The deal includes the distillery – New York State’s first since Prohibition – as well as a gourmet restaurant, visitor centre and grounds with riverfront views.
William Grant & Sons’ chief executive officer, Simon Hunt, said: “In 2010, William Grant & Sons bought the Hudson Whiskey brand as we were not only attracted to the possibilities within the American whiskey category but in particular, the authenticity of the Hudson brand and the excellence of the whiskey; the same is true of the distillery.”
The craft distillery was co-founded by Ralph Erenzo and Brian Lee, and its acquisition is described as a “logical addition” to William Grant’s US operations.
Hunt added: “The entire team at Tuthilltown bring an incredible passion to what they do and possess an entrepreneurial spirit that we will whole heartedly encourage.
“Ralph will still be very much involved in the business on a day-to-day basis collaborating and experimenting with our team of distillery experts and master blenders.”
Since it was launched in 2006, the Hudson Whiskey range – which initially consisted of Hudson Baby Bourbon – has expanded to include Hudson Manhattan Rye, Hudson Single Malt Whiskey, Hudson New York Corn Whiskey, Hudson Four Grain Bourbon as well as additional seasonal releases.
