Wild Island Gin ups production as demand surges

Colonsay Beverages is to ramp up production of Wild Island Botanic Gin, a premium gin infused with botanicals from the Inner Hebrides, as demand soars.

Wild Island Botanic Gin’s signature serve is in the form of a gin and tonic

The company says it has already successfully produced and sold four batches of 750 since its launch in December 2016. Following on from this unexpected high demand, it has brought forward production to meet the rising interest.

It has secured two wholesale agreements in Scotland and there have been further gains in London.

Distilled five times using 100% British wheat, Wild Island Botanic Gin is infused with hand-foraged botanicals including lemon balm, wild water mint, sea buckthorn, meadowsweet, heather flowers and bog myrtle, all from the Isle of Colonsay. The gin has a “fresh, crisp and complex character”, and a further ten botanicals give the base spirit depth. These are cinnamon bark, cassia, nutmeg, liquorice, lemon peel, orris root, angelica, coriander, juniper and orange peel.

Keith Bonnington, director, said: “Wild Island Gin’s characters make it a fantastic spring and summer tipple and we want to make sure we are part of the gin drinker’s repertoire on the laid back warmer weather occasions.”

Further discussing the gin’s flavour, Bonnington added: “We went a bit heavier than most gins on the dried lemon peel and steeped the botanicals for an unusually long time to release the essential oils in the zest and the result is even better than we had hoped.”

Wild Island Botanic Gin’s signature serve focuses on the classic gin and tonic, with sliced lemon and a twist of peel to highlight the citrus notes.

The gin is presented in a bottle decorated with a “distinctive expressionist watercolour interpretation” of the Isle of Colonsay’s Kiloran Bay. This follows a recent collaboration with Pink Sheep Studio, where lampshades made from Harris Tweed were colour matched to the bottle design.

Bottled at 43.7% abv, it is available online and at independent Scottish wine and spirits merchants.
