The week in pictures

On Sunday, Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem visited the home of Scotch whisky Chivas Regal in Speyside, Scotland. Javier was pictured exploring Strathisla Distillery – the oldest working distillery in the Scottish Highlands and was greeted by Chivas Regal custodian master blender, Colin Scott, who shared his secrets of the art of blending; while director of blending Sandy Hyslop, presented the actor with his own exclusive blend of Chivas Regal Ultis.

Bushmills Irish Whiskey has released a toast to give people a different way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. The ‘Bushmills Toast’ is inspired by the ancient ritual of honouring someone with a drink and is the first official toast in the brand’s 400 years of distilling history. The toast has been brought to life through a 40 second emotive video voiced by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Ciaran Lavery (pictured).

On Wednesday SB editor Kristiane Sherry joined the Quintessential Brands team at the Cheltenham Festival for Ladies Day – and the launch of the new Greenall’s Gin bottle.

In addition to enjoying the races, we also met master distiller Joanne Moore (pictured centre with Amanda Moorhouse, MPR Communications (L) and Kristiane Sherry (R)) and indulged in Greenall’s cocktails.

Rounding off the day was a trip to The Final Flight, Cheltenham’s Greenall’s bar packed with racegoers who danced the night away to live music while sipping on gin-based serves.

And it wasn’t just gin! The Dubliner Irish Whiskey is the Official Irish Whiskey of the Cheltenham Festival and racegoers celebrated their winnings with Dubliner Honeycomb Whiskey Sours, mixed by the talented team from The Cocktail Box. Cheers!

To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, Limoncello brand Pococello has created a ‘Little Green Fella’ cocktail – available in London Cocktail Club throughout March as part of the ‘Flavour of Month’ menu. The cocktail combines Pococello with traditional Irish spirit, poitin, and is topped with fresh cava and a few dashes of absinthe.

Jumeirah Golf Estates played host to the Dubai Irish Golf Society (DIGS) for the annual Mark Fahy Memorial Golf Tournament sponsored by Dubai Duty Free on Friday. Dubai Duty Free SVP-marketing Sinead El Sibai along with DIGS captain Conor Lawler presented the award to Nick Kane, who was crowned champion after scoring 43 points with a better back nine score.

SouthTrade International has launched the first ever Southern Comfort Travelling Tales Cocktail Competition in Australia, inviting bartenders from across the country to enter an original Southern Comfort-based cocktail inspired by an authentic story for their chance to be crowned Australia’s national champion. Entries open for the State Finals on 13 March and close on 16 April.

On Wednesday, Lindores Abbey Distillery in Fife, Scotland launched its Preservation Society membership with the symbolic first planting of a tree in its historic orchards and the unveiling of a global whisky ballot. The 1494’ members of The Lindores Abbey Preservation Society, who join with a £500 donation, will be entered into this launch ballot for a 200 litre ex-Woodford Reserve Bourbon cask, which will be filled with Lindores Abbey Distillery spirit from its first year of production.

Bulleit Bourbon will be popping up at bars and locations around the capital as part of London Beer Week 2017. Over the course of London’s largest celebration of beers, ales, lagers and ciders, a selection of top bars including Hopscotch and Peg + Patriot, will be serving limited edition Bulleit cocktails, all of which include beer as a key ingredient.

Karen Hoskin, co-founder of Montanya Distillers, will deliver the keynote at the American Distilling Institute (ADI) conference, where she will talk about the importance of rallying together as the industry continues to grow. This marks the first time a woman has been named the keynote since the conference’s inception in 2003.

The Dubai Duty Free Foundation and Dubai Cares signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at supporting the philanthropic efforts of both entities through Dubai Cares’ far-reaching programmes that support the empowerment of children and young people in developing countries with education. As part of the agreement, 50% of the funds collected from the Dubai Duty Free Foundation charity boxes located in all terminals at Dubai International and Al Maktoum International Airport as well as in other premises in Dubai, will be donated to Dubai Cares.

GMR Hyderabad Duty Free Retail Ltd (HDFRL) has announced the winner of the William Grant & Sons ‘Win a Nissan Terrano with Glenfiddich’ promotion that ran through the Diwali months of October and November last year. During a glittering event organised at the airport, Saurabh Kumar, CEO, Hyderabad Duty Free Retail Limited along with Rajiv Bhatia, director, Middle East, Levant, Indian Subcontinent and Africa, and Hardeep Sethi, manager, William Grant & Sons gave away a top-of-the-range Nissan Terrano  (Nissan Terrano XV Premium) to the winner – Mohammed Shazi Kandrikar.
