Buffalo Trace releases four-grain Bourbon

Buffalo Trace Distillery has released a new iteration of its Colonel E.H. Taylor Bourbon brand made using four different grains.

Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey uses a recipe of corn, rye, wheat and malted barley

Distilled from a recipe corn, rye, wheat and malted barley and aged for 12 years, Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey pays homage to Buffalo Trace’s former distillery owner.

The four grains were chosen since they are the ingredients E.H. Taylor would have had access to when he built Buffalo Trace in the 1800s.

The resulting Bourbon is said to have a “distinctly different flavour profile” from the typical rye and wheat recipe Bourbons made at Frankfort-based Buffalo Trace.

Given tasting notes include sweet vanilla and caramel corn, which are “underwritten” by slightly smoky flavours and oak tannins.

“We wanted to extract everything we like from both the rye and the wheat mashbills we currently use and combine them to see how they react,” said Harlen Wheatley, master distiller for Sazerac-owned Buffalo Trace Distillery. “Not surprisingly, it added complexity to the finished product.”

The Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. collection was first released in early 2011. This latest launch follows the 2016 release of Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. Seasoned Wood Bourbon Whiskey.

Limited quantities of Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey (100 proof, 50% abv) will be available at an RRP of US$69.99.
