Hammock design wins US$10k Art of Patrón prize

Tequila producer Patrón has named Philadelphian Scott Innes the winner of its US$10,000 Art of Patrón prize for his hammock design which was inspired by the brand’s signature bottle and cork.

Art of Patrón is an annual bottle art competition which encourages artists across the US to use Patrón bottles as “artistic inspiration”.

Original pieces must be made from or depict a Patrón bottle or component, and all submitted works must be accompanied by a short essay detailing the inspiration behind the piece.

A panel of judges – comprising artists, media and past Art of Patrón winners – then select 10 finalists, which are then put up for public vote.

The 2016 edition, the third running of the contest, saw Scott Ines triumph over nine other finalists with his piece The Art of Relaxation, a handmade, oversized hammock crafted from 1,523 corks collected from various Patrón bottles.

“I’m enormously proud to be selected as this year’s Art of Patrón winner, as it really shows how hard work and dedication can truly pay off,” said Innes.

“When I started saving Patrón corks 15 years ago, I knew one day I’d use them to create something extraordinary. The contest was a great motivation to submit my work and showcase my passion for Patrón.

“It’s an honour to be recognised by fans and judges from across the country and I want to thank everyone who voted.”

Lee Applbaum, global chief marketing officer at Patrón Spirits, added: “It’s inspiring to see the level of artistry and passion behind the diverse array of entries representing the iconography of our bottle.

“The level of inventiveness in Scott’s hammock is simply perfect.  From its complex framework to the intricate detailing of its cork-woven design, this innovative, functional art piece so remarkably captures the spirit and creativity we pride ourselves on at Patrón.”

Innes joins previous grand prize winners Rebecca Stoneback of Asbury Park, New Jersey and Brandon Montgomery of Phoenix, Arizona. The nine runners up each received a US$1,000 prize.

After each event, the winning and top finalists’ artwork are showcased at Patrón events over the coming year.

Last month, Patrón launched a limited edition one-litre format of its Silver Tequila bottle featuring an Art Deco pewter label design and gift bag.
