Brown-Forman to start work on Slane Castle
Brown-Forman is set to break ground on building the Slane Castle Irish Whiskey Distillery later this month having recently acquired the brand.
Slane Castle Irish Whiskey Distillery is set to be complete by late-2016
Marking the first time the Jack Daniel’s producer has built a distillery outside of the US, Brown-Forman will hold a ground-breaking ceremony at the site in County Meath on 29 September.
The group purchased all shares in Slane Castle Irish Whiskey in June this year and pledged US$50 million to build a new distillery and malting plant on the estate. The Slane Castle Estate has been owned by the Conyngham family since 1701.
Set to open in late 2016, Slane Castle Irish Whiskey Distillery will create nearly 25 full-time jobs and an additional 20 jobs during construction.
The distillery will launch new Irish whiskey brands by the spring of 2017 using third party-sourced liquid, which will consist of blended, pot still and single grain variants.
Slane Castle originally bottled its own Irish whiskey brand using liquid produced at the Cooley Distillery, until new owner Beam cut off third party production in 2012.
Alex Mountcharles initially submitted a planning application to Meath County Council to build the distillery in 2013, taking over a set of 18th and 19th century courtyard buildings on the estate.
Brown-Forman will lease the same site on a “very long-term” basis.
“Irish whiskey has been one of the fastest growing segments in the global whisky category over the last few years,” Lawson Whiting, executive vice president and chief brands & strategy officer for Brown-Forman, said at the time the acquisition was announced.
“We’re excited to be partnering with the Conyngham family as we build the new Slane Irish Whiskey Distillery and introduce new Irish whiskeys to the world.”
