Sci-fi cocktail book seeks funding on Kickstarter
By Amy HopkinsThe creator of a new science fiction-inspired cocktail book is seeking funding on Kickstarter to bring his product to market and follow the success of “cult classic” Blasphemous Cocktails.
Killer Cocktails from Outer Space has launched on crowd-funding website Kickstarter
The new work, called Killer Cocktails from Outer Space, contains more than 100 cocktail recipes inspired by works of science fiction, including Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5 and Farscape, as well as a number of other television shows.
It follows the launch of horror-inspired Blasphemous Cocktails in 2013, which alludes to work by writers including Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft and Clive Barker.
The book, authored by Steve Wollet, received three times its initial fundraising goal and instructs readers how to create ghoulish garnishes such as dripping blood and eyeballs.
“I looked at my notes from Blasphemous Cocktails and discovered dozens upon dozens of recipes I never used and they needed a home,” said Wollet.
“I was amazed to see half the book was written before I even started. Then I began to scour television and my DVD collection for inspiration. Soon over 100 recipes were done. Friends started asking if they could give me recipes too. The book grew quickly.”
Wollet is now seeking US$2,500 on crowd-funding website Kickstarter to cover printing costs.
As traditional routes to investment are squeezed, a number of cocktail and spirits start-ups have sought success through websites such as Kickstarter, as this roundup of the top 10 crowd-funded spirits projects shows.
