Young celebrities in South Korea could soon be banned from advertising alcohol if a new bill is approved, after the country’s alcohol consumption reaches an “all-time high”.
Musicians, singers, sports personalities and other well-known celebrities under the age of 25 could be restricted from appearing in adverts for alcoholic beverages by law if the bill is given the go-ahead by the National Assembly, according to the BBC.
The new bill was proposed after a spike in overall alcohol consumption, and following an advertisement in which ice skater, Kim Yuna, helped to promote a brewery at the age of 22.
Government figures report that locals drink 13.7 shots of spirits per week – twice as much as drinkers in Russia – with 64.8% of women in their twenties admitting they drink regularly, and one in 10 admitting to being “heavy drinkers”.
A survey published by Seoul’s Metropolitan Government reported “stress and the necessities of social life” were the factors prompting young women to consume alcohol.
