Cable network WGN America is to develop a series based on the 2004 book Blood and Whiskey: The Life and Times of Jack Daniel, written by Peter Krass, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Andrew Colville, who has worked on Mad Men and Lone Star, is understood to be working on the script and is set to serve as an executive producer.

Paul, who has also starred in films including Need for Speed and A Long Way Down, is now said to be lined up to tell the “true” tale of Daniel, who founded the Jack Daniel’s whiskey brand in Lynchburg, Tennessee between 1866 and 1875.

According to biographer Krass, Daniel became a moonshiner at the age of 15 after he was orphaned, before going on to build his namesake business following the American Civil War.

Today, Jack Daniel’s is owned by Brown-Forman and is the biggest-selling American whiskey brand in the world, shifting 12.2 million 9-litre cases in 2015, according to Brand Champions figures.

It is not yet clear when Blood and Whiskey will air, as there is not yet a studio attached to the project, The Hollywood Reporter notes.
