Spanish producer buys majority stake in Amer Gourmet

Spirits producer Destilerías MG has acquired a majority stake in Spanish alcohol importer Amer Gourmet for an undisclosed sum.

Amer Gourmet’s portfolio includes French gin Citadelle, Botran rum and Benromach Scotch whisky

Barcelona-based Amer Gourmet specialises in the import and distribution of a number of brands including French gin Citadelle, Botran rum, Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Benromach single malt Scotch whisky.

The merger is expected to create “major synergies” for the new group, Amer Gourmet said, adding that it will reinforce the company’s position in a market in which it has already become a “significant” player.

Amer Gourmet will continue to manage its current brand portfolio and César and Pablo Villar Amer, second generation of the company, will continue to manage the business.

Destilerías MG is a family-run business founded in Barcelona in 1835 with products present in more than 50 countries. Its portfolio includes Gin Mg, Igor vodka and Ron Cana Del Caribe.

César and Pablo Villar Amer, managers of Amer Gourmet, said: “It’s a great step forward for us. It’s very gratifying to have the support of a company with such trajectory and experience as MG. It’s undoubtedly an added factor that will help international brands continue to place their bets on us, not only to distribute their spirits in Spain, but also to help them build and consolidate their brands in our market.”
Manu Giró, general manager of Destilerías MG, said: “We are very satisfied with this agreement. Amer Gourmet has been demonstrating its capacity to grow its brands for years.
Both companies have the same values and similar origins. We both love excellence and place our bet on the quality. I’m sure our long experience and know-how in the spirits market will be of great help to Amer Gourmet. Undoubtedly, they also bring us all their knowledge in the sector. Both companies are reinforced with this acquisition.”
