Chivas Brothers has opened a visitor centre at its Scapa single malt Scotch whisky distillery for the first time in the brand’s 130-year history.

The distillery is the latest addition to Chivas Brothers’ visitor centres, which attract more than 100,000 people every year

The centre has been established to educate fans of the “artisanal” Orcadian Scotch about the methods used in the process of creating each expression.

Visits to Scapa consist of a tour of the manually-operated distillery – which has the only Lomond whisky still in Scotland – and a traditional Orcadian warehouse, before a walk along the harbour that separates the Orkney Islands, named the Scapa Flow.

In addition, visitors will also have the opportunity to taste a Scapa 16 Year Old expression, available to buy in the gift shop.

The distillery marks the latest addition to Chivas Brothers’ comprehensive visitor centres, which attract more than 100,000 people every year.

Caroline Mitchell, visitor centre manager for Chivas Brothers, said: “We are very excited to be able to offer Scotch aficionados, locals and tourists alike the chance to immerse themselves in the Scapa experience for the first time.

“Located on the shores of the breath-taking Scapa Flow, our boutique distillery’s visitor centre will provide our guests with an educational experience in a natural environment and we look forward to welcoming them to one of the most remote and beautiful locations in Scotland.”

Brian MacAulay, distilling manager at Scapa, added: “It is a great honour to be able to open the doors to the history and craft production processes here at Scapa distillery, which have been the secret of precious few artisans over the last hundred years. “

The Scapa visitor centre and tour will be open to adults seven days per week until September 28 and then five days per week until November 13, from 9:30am until 5pm.
